James Plett: Why I quit the BC Liberals! #bcpoli #bcliberals #christyclark #webelieveinbc

BC Liberal former Surrey Vice President Speaks!

Yesterday as you all know a number of the BC Liberal executive resigned in the Surrey region. Putting pen to paper as they say, gutsy Surrey-Tynehead Vice President has put his thoughts and words down on a brand new web page.( http://www.jamesplett.com/)

I invited James as a guest blogger and he has accepted.

With thanks and without further adieu, James Plett:

Why I Quit the BC Liberals

March 1, 2013
You may actually have heard elsewhere, but today I have resigned my post as the Vice President of the Surrey-Tynehead BC Liberal Riding Association and have requested my membership be terminated immediately with the BC Liberal Party.

My resignation has nothing to do with the riding per se, nor with Dave Hayer — the best MLA in BC — nor with the riding’s acclaimed candidate, Amrik Virk, but rather with the pattern of arrogance, deceit, and downright unethical behaviour of the BC Liberal Party.

The most recent scandal — “ethnicgate” — is one of the most appalling things I have read about this party doing. Government staffers, who are required to be non-partisan, put together a document explaining how the BC Liberal government could take advantage of horribly racist crimes in order to get a jump in the ethnic vote. The document talked about leveraging an apology for the Chinese Head Tax and the Komagatu Maru incident, to name two. This document was circulated among some of the highest levels of provincial government.

What makes it so repugnant is that the government misused taxpayer dollars to put together a document explaining how the government could misuse taxpayer dollars further and to offer apologies for absolutely horrible things all for a bump in the polls. Not to actually apologize for the events, but with the end goal of winning popularity points.

Ethnicgate is just the latest string in a series of scandals that have plagued the BC Liberal Party. Unofficially, I checked out months ago, but I am horribly embarassed that my name was still associated with that party for all this time. Whether we’re talking about the John van Dongen tossup or the incident with John Doyle, it is pretty clear that this party is being run by crooks.

I’m not the only one who feels this way. Numerous leaders of riding associations have already resigned, and part of the reason involves the parachuting in of acclaimed candidates. Basically, the notion of a parliamentary democracy is that anyone can run and be elected. The reality is that you need to be a member of a big party (typically). What’s more is that you need to be vetted and essentially hired by that party in order to run. It doesn’t matter if you have amazing credentials, if the party has someone else marked for that riding, you will not get it. They will not give it to you. They will put your application in a folder and toss it aside. It doesn’t matter if “the people” want you, it doesn’t matter if they would have elected you. What matters is that some obscure shadow council likes you. It’s an affront to democracy. What’s happening across BC is that candidates are being acclaimed, just like that, with no warning or notification to the various riding associations. Amrik Virk, who is himself a very great man and someone I would have supported anyway, for example, was acclaimed the other day. That’s it. No choice. On March 4th, the “nomination meeting” will happen. There won’t be a yes/no vote, nothing. There will be an acceptance speech. This is happening across BC as the powers-that-be in the BC Liberal Party decides which chess pieces it will deploy across the province. Whether you’re a member of the party or not, it doesn’t matter. You have no say — and what’s more, that’s the point.

The Party expects your allegiance. They don’t want you to speak out. They’ll smear you if you do. “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you,” they’ll say. I have given years to the BC Liberal Party and people like me are being shuffled aside across the province. It’s horrible. The Party is only as strong as its weakest link, but chains of people are being discarded. The Party expects absolute allegiance and absolute servitude. If you deny it that, they will cast you aside.

My decision has been months in the making. So long ago, I decided I would only stay along to support Dave Hayer. I wouldn’t go to any events that didn’t involve him. I endured dozens of phone calls from the Liberals asking for money; I declined every time, advising that I would only give money directly to my MLA. I would support him, not the party.

I was relieved when Dave announced he would not run in the next election. This meant that my tenure with The Party could come to an end. I could leave with a clean conscience, knowing that I didn’t support the depravity that The Party had now come to represent. I was proud, after all, of the work I had done: I had helped Dave get elected and helped work on numerous campaigns. I had been a paid employee of The Party and had done a lot of good work for them. I worked on a number of initiatives and helped form a number of pieces of policy. I’m not at all embarrassed by what I’ve done or what I’ve helped do.

That changed with Ethnicgate. I can no longer stand idly by. I can no longer watch from the sidelines as The Party crashes itself into the ground. That seems to be the fate of political parties in BC, but I cannot stand idly by.

To be a true political observer, one must adopt a sort of moral pragmatism. Under Henry James’s pragmatism, everything is a means to an end and the means only matter insofar as the end is valuable. Under this system, morality is discarded and left at the wayside in order to develop good or otherwise valuable policy.

It is under this system that The Party – in fact, all political parties – seem to want us to live. Ethnicgate was OK to the people who orchestrated it because the ends – re-electing The Party and locking the socialist hordes outside the gate for four more years – justified the means. Pragmatism can turn a perfectly reasonable or otherwise “moral” person into the kind of depraved individual who would do this kind of thing.

I cannot abide this system any longer. The people responsible for Ethnicgate – every single person – are categorically morally reprehensible people. It makes me physically ill to consider the type of person who could, in good or bad conscience, do what they did. I cannot and will not stand by or sit on my hands or be idle in any other way. This is and was the final straw for me.

I worked with a number of amazing people over the years (just over six years, actually) and made a number of great friends. I have no regrets about what I’ve done and remain proud of what I’ve accomplished. I am, however, saddened it has come to this. My resignation is certainly not the first, nor will it be the last. At this point, the spectre of the BC NDP – the “socialist horde at the gates” — is no longer frightening. That trope – a BC Liberal staple for years – is stale and meaningless. It barely worked in 2009, and it certainly won’t work in 2013. Now, myself and so many people like me have to ask ourselves: what’s worse, four years of the NDP or four more years of the BC Liberals?

Honestly, I don’t know the answer.

Christy Clark Throws Kim Haakstad to the Wolves ! #bcpoli #webelieveinbc #canpoli

Leadership what’s that all about?

The strategy for wooing ethnic voters has come with a price tag for Christy Clark’s deputy chief of staff Kim Haakstad.

She has just resigned.

Will it be enough to save the Premier’s sorry you know what?

Who knows it’s only 6:20 on what could be a wild BC weekend in politics.

Oh and raise your hand if you think the premier had no knowledge that this stuff was happening.

Didn’t see a lot of hands go up.

Stay tuned!

Updated:The Globe and Mail Alienates Their Readers Once Again! #bcpoli #webelieveinbc #election2013

More Shoddy Journalism from Canada’s National Newspaper.

29% of Liberal Voters have had enough of their own party so says today’s release of an Angus Reid Poll.

The Angus Reid poll says that if an election were held today 47% would vote for the BCNDP and 31% would vote for the BC Liberals. It goes on to say that the Conservatives and Greens polled?

It doesn’t..

In a slap in the face to those voters and readers who might vote Green or Conservative the Globe doesn’t even bother to tell you what they polled.

Writer Hume says that the poll is based on decided voters. So just what percentage of voters polled were decided? undecided?

Who knows ( other than Angus Reid) because the Globe certainly didn’t share that fact.

Nope the Globe doesn’t think those numbers are important enough to share with it’s readers.

The Globe used to live and die by it’s mantra “Well Written,Well Read”

Not Anymore.

Christy Clark and the Throne Speech that Prepares You for the Death Of Her Government!

This government started it’s road to defeat here!

I sat in the Speakers Gallery watching the Throne speech this past Tuesday and I was blown away by the lack of enthusiasm by any of the people present ( Lana Popham excluded).

I have seen and heard plenty of throne speeches in my time and this was by far the worst.

Lets get Harry Lali’s opinion: ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

That’s right Harry was sound asleep through part of it and if it wasn’t for sidekick Popham poking him and waking him up we would have heard him snoring.

Worse than that were all the BC Liberals shaking hands before the start of the speech welcoming each other back (Except Kevin Falcon he wasn’t there). This implies that these folks didn’t get together before the speech which makes you wonder how cohesive that caucus is.

Wonder no more as Clark has tried and evidently* failed to bring back the ousted Independent John Slater back to support her budget.

You might be thinking she has a majority why would she need him?

To answer that question is to contradict a famous line uttered by former Manitoba Premier Gary Filmon ” a majority is a majority is a majority”.

A majority is not a majority when your own caucus will not support your budget. Thus the reason Clark likely went begging Slater to come back.

Will the government fall? That’s one scenario.

Will Clark fall? That’s another scenario?

If the budget flunks the test of the house will Clark go begging to the Lieutenant Governor for more time?

Are there other scenarios?

Once again lets ask Harry? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

* I use the word evidently because after all this the John Slater, Christy Clark and the BC Liberals we are talking about.

Rich Coleman:So Just Who Will Feel The Wrath Of the Bully During Election 2013? #bcpoli #bccp2013 #bully

BC Liberal Campaign Training

First this post assumes two things, namely that there will be an election in BC in May 2013 and secondly that Rich Coleman will run again.

Neither of these two are gimmes given BC’s political climate and the party and province’s distaste for the Premier and Liberal leader Christy Clark.

It is possible that when the house returns, the majority Liberals will move (due to some manufactured calamity like Clark being deposed/ disposed of as leader) to introduce legislation to move ahead the fixed election date.

It is also not a gimme that Richie C will run again ( despite the blustery BS from him to the contrary) given the fact that he will most certainly be relegated to the back benches.

Also remember that a mere 6 months or so after the provincial election, nominations and preparations will begin for the next federal election. This is an election where the Prime Minister has pledged open nominations in all seats including Conservative bastions where Coleman resides and votes. He could find that enticing!

Also Clark could get the boot which also might look attractive to Coleman to make a run for her job too under and different election date.

But should things stay on course and we have an election in May, just exactly who might feel the wrath of Rich Coleman just a few scant months from now?

For the answer to that you need look no farther than the recent BC Liberal leadership campaign.

If you recall Coleman mulled over a run for the roses back then and changed his mind.

Ever wonder why that was?

One reason: Mary Polak bailed on him and threw her support behind Kevin Falcon.

Think Coleman has forgotten?

There is about as much chance of that as Polak forgetting that Coleman actually helped put a lot of money in her campaign in 2009 ( nothing untoward, it’s just how the BC Liberals do things).

Not a chance that will happen this time, nor will the volunteers from Coleman’s crew pitch in and help her out either.

Nope, Polak will have more to worry about than the specter of Cummins, the BC Conservatives,Green Party and the NDP to take her seat away.

She will have to spend her days wondering where Rich Coleman will strike next!

Don’t feel sorry for her , she of all people should have known what Coleman was like.

Christy Clark: Leadership Vacuum at the Top!

Christy Clark: In my heart I belong on a Bollywood stage

The optics of last nights Bollywood spending spree by the premier were awful.

The Christy Clark BC Liberal Government pledges $11 million dollars for the copycat film awards ( BC lost the real McCoy days earlier) and in vain attempt to save face, Clark and her handlers picked the occasion of a town hall meeting to “Save BC Film” to make her announcement.

Of course Bollywood investment is important but there is a time and a place to make the big splash. The night when your own film industry meets to find solutions to save the industry from disappearing is not it.

Not only do the people of BC film feel like they got a slap in the face but it gives Clark an excuse for not showing up and answering the tough questions that these folks might have.

Clark does this a lot as evidenced by her making a You tube video instead of showing up at the Coast Guard rally this past weekend.

This is nothing more than the kind of weak leadership we have come to expect from Christy Clark and the BC Liberal Government.

We deserve better!

BC Liberals to Give Auditor-General John Doyle the High Hard One? #bccp2013 #bcpoli #canpoli

de Jong: One less hurdle between me and the budget!

According to the Vancouver Sun, the scandal plagued BC Liberal Government is about to send Auditor-General John Doyle packing and not renew his contract.

That the BC Liberal Government would do this should not shock anybody!

Doyle has held the Liberals feet to the fire over such things as deferral accounts for BC Hydro and Christy Clark’s favorite file, the BC Rail case.

In the latter, Doyle has been trying to gain access to documents related to the $6 million dollar legal fees that the government wrote off regarding Basi and Virk.

Applications for new applicants must be received by January 25,2013 and John Van Dongen need not apply.

He will be the only one left going to court to get the aforementioned documents as I would imagine anybody with an ounce of integrity will be screened out during the interview process.

The lucky applicant will also be too busy during the early stages of his or her new appointment to review any of the hogwash the Liberals will no doubt bring forth in their pre-election budget.

You also have to remember that this is BC Politics in action and this committee has to vote unanimously, secretly and without accountability to renew his contract , so I would also take with a grain of salt what the NDP will say happened. Their people could have also voted against renewal to ensure the Liberals looked stupid.

Only in BC!

Christy Clark and Mary Polak: Port Mann Bridge Open; Seasonably! #bcpoli,#canpoli

Christy Clark Pointing to Canned Hot AIR Imported From the Liberal Caucus Used to Melt remaining Ice On Port Mann Bridge!

They built a new 8 lane bridge only drive-able in good weather!

Can’t the BC Liberals do anything right?

You think at least on of the geniuses somewhere would have taken into consideration that yes, even in Vancouver winter rears it’s ugly head once in a while.

But no not in Liberal land.

If you are reading this from outside the province, our brand new bridge was shut down in the first winter storm of the year due to falling ice and snow hitting cars and breaking windshields.

This bridge is a major transportation route that is tolled between downtown Vancouver and the suburbs.

One can only imagine the mess that would have occurred had the old one been torn down already.

Unbelievable!

May 2013 can’t come soon enough can it?

BC LIberals are to Blame for the Downgrade Issued By Moody’s

I’ll Leave that to Mike to get us out of this Mess!

You bet the Downgrade to AAA Negative from AAA Stable lands in the Lap of the BC Liberal government.

Moody’s issued the downgrade based on a weak economy and weak commodity prices.

In fact that should not catch anybody sleeping at their desk especially those in the political staff in the office of our inept government.

The Ministry of Finance issues a yearly publication entitled The Yearly Financial and Economic Review.

Had the folks in budget planning read at least until they got to page 6 they would have seen that natural gas was trading even lower in 2011 than it was in 2010.

We know from the last economic update a few weeks back that that figure is even worse now and took a lot of the blame for the increase in the deficit from our fearless Finance Minister Mike ( Don’t worry I will still balance the budget within two months) de Jong.

If you are familiar with the expression bullshit baffles brains; be prepared for the Liberals to do everything they can ( Including having Suhk Dhaliwal say he supports the BC Liberal Government‘s Economic record ) to henceforth pull out all the stops to,well, baffle your brain.

This all happened, by the way while the house was not in session ,because the BC Liberal retreaded Ministers had to spend that time getting familiar with their files?

Next thing you know, they will tell the house in the spring they need more time to get the budget in order when they put through legislation to change the fixed election date.

They wouldn’t do that would they?

Sukh Dhaliwal: His Candidacy is His Way of Standing Up for the Interests of Sukh Dhaliwal!

Former Federal Liberal Sukh Dhaliwal Joins the BC Liberal Team!

Below you can read the email from Sukh Dhaliwal introducing himself as the BC Liberal Candidate for the riding of Surrey- Panoramma .

He says he is not prepared to sit on the sidelines and be an observer during the next election.

Lets be clear: Sukh is on the sidelines because the voters in his federal Electoral District handed him his head on a silver platter in the last federal election.

His email proves he hasn’t learned the lesson the voters sent him.

He follows a Premier who, in year end interviews says she will continue to follow the same course she has followed in the last 21 months.

This course includes bringing in the HST,taking her sweet time getting rid of it once the people by referendum directed her to, adding an extra holiday, raising the minimum wage all at great cost to the very same small business people that Sukh claims to be a part of.

They have raised just about every rate you can name and at the same time say they have a family first agenda.

We have been gouged with gas, carbon and toll taxes in the BC Liberals continuing war in the car.

We have watched as they tried to sell of the Liquor Distribution Branch in their latest attempt at a cash grab necessary to balance the budget.

This failure was followed by the recent beer-gate scandal

Did I hear somebody say Trans Link mismanagement? The BC Liberals took part in that too.

The BC liberals, who Sukh claims are the best economic managers wants to join a team that sets “Apira-tional targets as opposed to realistic ones.

Dhaliwal will fit right in with this BC Liberal crew given the pointers he probably picked up from his formal federal Liberal mates during the tail end of the sponsorship scandal.

I expect that come election night Sukh will find out there is still a place for him on the side lines as I am sure the voters haven’t forgotten.

Maybe while he is waiting he can help the Premier figure out why the women don’t support her in the polls.

That is unless he too in his heart is a Filipina!

THE EMAIL

While we are all getting prepared for the upcoming holiday season, I am also excited to be getting back on the campaign trail.

I have decided to accept the nomination to run in the next provincial election May 14 to represent my riding of Surrey-Panorama. My current MLA, Hon. Stephanie Cadieux, will be moving to Surrey-Cloverdale, where she lives, to take the place of the retiring Kevin Falcon.

I want to thank Kevin for his exceptional service to this province and especially to Surrey. While I was a Member of Parliament, Mr. Falcon was a great help to me on a number of issues. I wish Kevin and his family the best in their future.
The next election is a very critical one for our province. We are at a crossroads. I have made this decision to run because I am not prepared to sit on the sidelines.

I have lived in Surrey-Panorama for the past 15 years, raised my family here, built my business, and of course represented part of this riding as a Member of Parliament from 2006 to 2011.

As a small business owner with 12 employees, I am responsible for the incomes that support 12 families. The prospect of an NDP government is very concerning to me, and to many small business owners who I have spoken to throughout the riding.

It is very important that we have a government that believes in free enterprise and a competitive economic climate.

Premier Clark and the BC Liberals are the best choice to protect our economy, and I am proud to join the team to defend these principles.

As I always have, I believe in governance that is balanced – sound fiscal management with a social conscience. I believe that a thriving economy allows for strong investments in health care, in education, in social services, etc.

I also want to help the Premier keep taxes low, and make life more affordable for families and seniors. This is a fundamental principle that the NDP has seemed to forgotten – that the middle class will be squeezed out, and that they need relief, not extra tax burdens in order to pay for the basic services we deserve as British Columbians.

The future of our province is at stake, and my candidacy is my way of standing up for the people and the interests of Surrey-Panorama.
